15 October 2024Hans Verstraeten’s journey into software development
We spoke with Hans Verstraeten, Software Development Engineer at CSi. Hans joined us in April and takes us through his job, how he started and his first impressions.
From mechanical engineering to software development
“I trained as a mechanical engineer, gaining software experience through internships and my studies. At CSi, I could start without any further studies, as I can continue learning on the job. CSi was particularly interested in my mechanical engineering background because it aligns with what we do. Currently, I’m working on PLC programming. This has more in common with mechanical engineering, making it an easy transition and a good starting point. I’m also involved in creating software specifications and I’m part of a standardisation project. Later on I’ll have the opportunity to grow into PC and robot programming.”
CSi gave me the opportunity
“I was actually in talks with another company when CSi came along. The other company offered me a position as a mechanical engineer, since it’s difficult to be valued without a software degree. However, this wasn’t an issue for CSi, and they gave me the opportunity to develop my skills in software development. That’s why I chose CSi. I’m also really drawn to the fact that I get to travel for work, visiting clients worldwide to help with commissioning.
Before accepting the job, I hadn’t really looked into the secondary employment benefits. So, it was a pleasant surprise to realise that there are quite a few perks, such as the vitality budget. Now, I go to the gym three times a week, because I pay the cost of my gym membership with that budget.”
Enthusiastic, supportive, and friendly colleagues
“My first impression is very positive! The company is larger than my previous one, but you don’t notice that in the atmosphere at all. The people here are great, collegial and flexible. It’s nice to work with colleagues who are enthusiastic about their work. Everyone is open to lending a hand, and it’s easy to approach colleagues. Plus, the fact that our clients are based all over the world is exciting, especially considering the travel opportunities.
I’ve also heard from many colleagues that they’ve moved into different roles within CSi, so there’s the possibility of changing positions if you wish. That’s a reassuring prospect for the future. Additionally, there are often small events outside of work, like an ice cream treat or something bigger like a coffee cart get-together or company BBQ. I’m very happy to have started here and I’m curious what my future at CSi brings.”
